Amber

Physical Information

Amber is not a mineral but fossilised tree resin. Millions of years ago, trees produced sticky resin to protect themselves. Some of it was buried in soil and sediment, where it slowly hardened over a very long time. Amber is usually golden yellow, honey or cognac coloured, but it can also be cream, red or green. Some pieces contain small plants or insects that were trapped in the resin.

The best-known amber comes from the Baltic Sea region, and it is also found in the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Amber is very light and feels warm to the touch. It is soft, about 2 to 2.5 on the Mohs scale, so keep it away from heat, perfume, alcohol and hard stones.

Metaphysical Properties

Amber is known as a stone of sunshine. It is believed to bring warmth, joy and a bright, positive mood. Many people use it when they want to feel more cheerful, confident and calm. As an ancient natural material, it is also seen as a link to the past and to the wisdom of nature.

It is associated with the solar plexus chakra, which is linked to confidence and personal energy. Many people wear amber as a necklace or bracelet, or keep a piece on a sunny windowsill. It has been used as jewellery and as a protective amulet for thousands of years.

How to Recognise Real Amber

Amber is often imitated with plastic, glass or copal, which is a much younger tree resin. Real amber is light and warm, never cold and heavy like glass. Very large, perfect insects, or many identical pieces, can be a sign of an imitation. Pressed amber, made from small amber pieces joined under heat, is also common. Buy from a trusted seller if you want natural amber.
