Agate
Physical Information
Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony, a form of quartz made of tiny crystals. It forms in cavities in volcanic and other rocks, where silica-rich water fills the space layer by layer. This slow process creates its typical bands and rings. Agate comes in almost every colour, from white, grey and blue to red, brown and yellow. Many varieties have their own names, such as Moss Agate, Crazy Lace Agate or Blue Lace Agate.
Agate is found in many countries, including Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, India and Botswana. It is hard and durable, about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so it is ideal for jewellery, slices and carvings. Please note that very bright blue, pink, purple or green agate is usually dyed, as agate takes colour easily.
Metaphysical Properties
Agate is known as a stone of balance. It is believed to bring stability, calm and emotional strength. Many people use it when they want to feel more centred, patient and safe, especially during busy or stressful times. Its steady layers are often seen as a symbol of slow and gentle growth.
Agate is generally associated with the root chakra, which is linked to grounding and security, but different colours are also linked to other chakras. Many people carry a tumbled agate, wear it as jewellery, or keep an agate slice in the home or on a windowsill, where light shines through its bands.
