Heliotrope is known for its deep green base color accented with distinctive red or brownish-red spots. This striking contrast gives the stone a bold, earthy appearance that has been appreciated for centuries.

Because of its durability and characteristic patterning, Heliotrope is commonly used for polished stones, beads, carvings, seals, and decorative objects. Each piece displays a unique distribution of red inclusions formed naturally within the stone.

Heliotrope is a variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz, SiO₂) colored green by chlorite or amphibole minerals. The red spots are caused by iron oxide (hematite) inclusions. Heliotrope is also widely known as Bloodstone. In ancient times, it was used for engraved seals and amulets, and medieval craftsmen believed it could stop bleeding—hence its common name.
