Foo Dogs — the Western nickname for Shi Shi (石獅), or Chinese Guardian Lions — are majestic stone lion statues traditionally placed in pairs at the entrances of temples, palaces, and important buildings. Originating in the Han Dynasty over 2,000 years ago, their design was inspired by real lions introduced to China through the Silk Road. In feng shui and Chinese culture, Foo Dogs symbolize protection, strength, and authority: the male (often with a ball) guards the structure, while the female (with a cub) protects those inside. Always facing outward, they stand as vigilant guardians against evil spirits.
