Selenite is a crystalline variety of gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate, CaSO₄·2H₂O). It is very soft, with a Mohs hardness of 2, meaning it can be scratched with a fingernail. Some of the world’s largest natural crystals are selenite, including the giant crystals found in the Naica Mine in Mexico, which can grow several meters long. The name comes from the Greek selēnē, meaning “moon,” referring to its moon-like glow
