Sardonyx

Sardonyx

Physical Information

Sardonyx is a banded variety of chalcedony composed of alternating layers of sard (reddish-brown chalcedony) and onyx (black or white chalcedony).
These natural layers create striking patterns of red, orange, brown, white, and sometimes black, giving the stone its characteristic striped appearance.
It forms in volcanic and sedimentary environments where silica-rich solutions slowly deposit in layers over time.
With a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, Sardonyx is durable and has been used since ancient times in seals, cameos, and protective amulets.
Major sources include India, Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, and the USA.
Its bold colours and historical significance make Sardonyx a popular stone among collectors and artists.
