Ruby

Physical Information

Ruby is the red variety of corundum, composed of aluminum oxide with trace amounts of chromium that give it its vivid red colour.
Shades range from deep blood-red to pinkish-red, with the most prized being the glowing “pigeon blood” hue.
Ruby is extremely hard — Mohs hardness 9 — making it one of the most durable gemstones, second only to diamond.
It forms in metamorphic rocks such as marble and in certain igneous rocks where aluminum-rich minerals transform under heat and pressure.
Rubies may contain natural inclusions like rutile needles (“silk”) or dark mineral spots, which confirm authenticity and create unique internal patterns.
Major sources include Myanmar, Mozambique, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Madagascar.
Throughout history, Ruby has been cherished as a royal stone of power, protection, and vitality.
