Nephrite Jade
Physical Information
Nephrite is one of the two minerals that are called true jade. The other is jadeite. Nephrite belongs to the amphibole group, and it is made of tiny interlocking fibres. This structure makes it one of the toughest natural stones. It is very hard to break, even though its hardness is only about 6 to 6.5.
It is usually green, from soft creamy tones to deep spinach green, but it can also be white, yellow, brown or black. Polished nephrite has a smooth, oily to silky shine. Important sources include China, New Zealand, Canada and Russia. It has been carved into tools, jewellery and sacred objects for thousands of years, especially in China and by the Māori of New Zealand.

It is associated with the heart chakra, and people use it to support compassion, love and emotional healing in times of grief or stress. Many also connect it with prosperity and wise decisions, so it is often given as a gift for new beginnings.
