Muscovite

Physical Information

Muscovite is the most common member of the mica group of minerals. It forms thin, flexible sheets that can be peeled apart like the pages of a book. It is usually colourless, silver or grey, but it can also be pale pink, yellow, brown or green, with a pearly, shimmering shine.

Its name comes from "Muscovy glass", after an old name for Russia, where thin sheets were once used as window panes. Today muscovite is found in granites, pegmatites and schists around the world. With a hardness of only 2 to 2.5, it is very soft and flakes easily. Handle it gently, keep it dry and do not rub or scrub it.

Metaphysical Properties

Muscovite is known as a stone of insight. It is believed to support mental clarity, self-reflection and a clearer view of difficult situations. Many people use it to become more flexible and to adapt to change with less stress.

It is associated with the third eye chakra and the crown chakra. People use it in meditation to support intuition and inner guidance, and its shimmering layers are said to inspire creativity and new ideas. Some also use it for gentle protection from negative energy.
